Create your own Government Gateway Account

Having your own Government Gateway account is essential for managing your personal finances securely and efficiently. This account will give you direct access to a range of HMRC services, enabling you to view and update your tax information, monitor pension contributions, and manage self-assessment filings. For investors, it’s vital for staying compliant with tax regulations, claiming tax relief on eligible investments, and keeping track of your financial obligations. By maintaining your own account, you ensure full control over sensitive information, protect yourself from unauthorised access, and streamline communication with HMRC.

How to Create a Government Gateway Account:

You will need the following information: 

  • Your full name. 

  • An email address. 

  • A password. 

  • A memorable word, which Government Gateway calls a ‘recovery word’. 


​Then follow these simple steps:

Step 1: Follow this link: Register for HMRC Online Services

 

Step 2: Accept or Reject Cookies 

 

Step 3: Click: Set up an account. (see link circled in red below).

Step 4: On next page, click: Create sign in details (see link circled in red below).

Step 5: On next page, complete your email address in the box and click: CONTINUE

 
Step 6: Check your email inbox (including your Junk folder) for an email from: Government Gateway no-reply@access.service.gov.uk. Within this email there will be a confirmation code that is valid for 30 minutes only. Copy the code from within the email and paste/enter it into the confirmation code box displayed on the Government website. If you have not received a code, click on ‘I have not got the email’ and a new code will be emailed to you. 
 

Step 7: Once you have entered the code from the email the website should say: 
Email address confirmed. If so, then click: CONTINUE 
 

Step 8: Complete the fields as requested on the Government website and submit.
